Democratic Debate Rankings, 1/31/08: Obama outclasses Clinton

January 31st, 2008 · No Comments

The big winner of tonight’s Los Angeles debate was the Democratic Party.  Overall, a substantive and appropriately cordial debate, which benefited both candidates.  Barack Obama’s graciousness throughout put a damper on ”The Snub” from earlier in the week, and he wisely avoided any “You’re likeable enough” moments as well.  He even went so far as to hold Hillary Clinton’s chair for [...]

Objects in Hillary’s mirror closer than they appear

January 31st, 2008 · No Comments

According to the Gallup Daily Tracking Poll, Hillary Clinton held a 20-point national lead over Barack Obama as late as January 20.  A week ago, that lead was 15 points; three days ago, it was 9.  Today, in a national poll, Obama is within an astonishing 4 points of Clinton.  For the many of us [...]

Giuliani and McCain tonight on Leno

January 31st, 2008 · No Comments

And not a moment too soon.  This writer’s strike is really killing NBC’s late night shows.  It’s bad enough to have to do those shows without writers (how many times can Conan entertain us by spinning his wedding ring on the desk?), but what’s worse is the lack of guests.  For the last month, the NBC News division has [...]

Republican Debate Rankings, 1/30/08: Romney on top

January 31st, 2008 · 3 Comments

This was the first debate I’ve watched using CNN’s online real-time reaction tracker.  It’s a graph from 1 to 100 that shows you how people are reacting, positively or negatively (100 being absolute positive, 1 being absolute negative), toward what a candidate is saying, and it’s pretty amazing.  The Politico– CNN’s partner in the debate– [...]

Missing the Big Picture

January 31st, 2008 · No Comments

In all the excitement of John Edwards and Rudy Giuliani exiting the race, I completely missed the big picture: 1. For the first time in American history, there will be a presidential nominee from a major party who is not a white male.  Regardless of how you feel about Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, it’s [...]

Hillary Clinton and the Casual Voter

January 30th, 2008 · No Comments

Most candidates would be too embarrassed to stage a faux victory party in a primary contest where no delegates were awarded and no one competed.  Not Hillary Clinton.  Yesterday in Florida, she held a campaign rally disguised as a fundraiser to celebrate her “victory” over Barack Obama and John Edwards.  Clinton’s calculation was that it [...]

That seismic shift you felt in the Republican Party yesterday

January 30th, 2008 · No Comments

Was a collective move by the entire party away from the right, back toward the center of the political spectrum.  The fact that John McCain– he of campaign finance, climate change, and immigration reform– and Mitt Romney– a blue-state, health-care-mandating, formerly pro-choice, governor– are now the party’s two frontrunners is astonishing.  Ben Smith and David Kuhn [...]

Edwards out. Who benefits most: Clinton, Obama, or Edwards?

January 30th, 2008 · 2 Comments

CNN is reporting that John Edwards will drop out of the Democratic presidential primary race in a speech this afternoon in New Orleans, Louisiana, and will not endorse another candidate.  Which means the two-person race the media has been pushing for a year between Clinton and Obama is now a reality.  It also means that Edwards will [...]

TrainWreck Politics goes online

January 29th, 2008 · No Comments

Oh, God, another political blog?  What’s the point? Because as disappointed as I am with the mainstream media, I’m also disappointed at the way certain things slip through the cracks of the blogosphere as well.  I’ve gritted my teeth and tolerated it for almost a year now (yeah, “gritted” is a word– I checked), but the whirlwind of events over [...]
