Hillary Clinton tries her best to keep the Obama-Muslim smear alive

By Griffin · March 3rd, 2008 · 3 Comments

In last night’s 60 Minutes interview, Steve Kroft questioned Hillary Clinton about the smear campaign against Barack Obama’s faith.  When asked repeatedly if she believed that Obama was a Muslim, Clinton used a number of phrases that made it seem like her denial was based more on a lack of evidence rather than a sincere belief that Obama has never been Muslim.  As if she just hadn’t gotten those e-mails yet.

She could have simply said, “No, Barack Obama is not a Muslim and has never been a Muslim.  This is a case of ridiculous rumors versus demonstrable facts.”  But watch and read as she inserts as much doubt into her denials as she possibly can without looking like she’s joining in on the smear campaign herself:

KROFT: You don’t believe that Senator Obama’s a Muslim?

CLINTON: Of course not. I mean, that, you know, there is no basis for that. I take him on the basis of what he says. And, you know, there isn’t any reason to doubt that.

KROFT: You said you’d take Senator Obama at his word that he’s not…a Muslim. You don’t believe that he’s…?

CLINTON: No. No, there is nothing to base that on. As far as I know.

KROFT: It’s just scurrilous…?

CLINTON: Look, I have been the target of so many ridiculous rumors, that I have a great deal of sympathy for anybody who gets, you know, smeared with the kind of rumors that go on all the time.

That’s true, Hillary Clinton has been the target of a number of ridiculous rumors.  So imagine for a moment how it might have sounded if Barack Obama had hedged and parsed and issued the same weak denial against one of them:

KROFT: You don’t believe that Senator Clinton’s a lesbian?

OBAMA: Of course not. I mean, that, you know, there is no basis for that. I take her on the basis of what she says. And, you know, there isn’t any reason to doubt that.

KROFT: You said you’d take Senator Clinton at her word that she’s not…a lesbian. You don’t believe that she’s…?

OBAMA: No. No, there is nothing to base that on. As far as I know.

I was struck by her comment, “as far as I know.” I guess she believes “All is fair in love and war.”

    Sad.

He refuses to wear a flag pin, and keeps his hands at his side during the National Anthem. He’s not the most patriotic person in the world that’s for sure!

Can this woman sink any lower? “As far as I know.” This should sum it up for all voters in TX and OH tomorrow. Do you want to vote for some manipulative self serving POL that’s as divisive as Karl Rove? I’m not a fan of tweedy bird Mathews, but he pumelled HRC tonight for this racist xenophobic comment. Do we really want to go back to this slime from the 90s? I voted for Bill but Hillary no way. She wouldn’t get my vote for town dog catcher.
