Maybe the crudest instance of sexism in the race thus far took place live on Fox News this morning, as conservative writer Caroline Baum used a pretty vulgar term– vulgar enough to literally clear the room– regarding the female anatomy to explain why Sarah Palin may or may not appeal to Hillary Clinton voters.
So why does the McCain campaign’s Palin Truth Squad (aka the sexism police) have a meltdown every time anyone mentions Palin negatively, why would they attack Tina Fey and Amy Poehler earlier this week, but have no response to something like this? Because there’s no political points to be scored by attacking a conservative Palin-friendly pundit giving an interview on a conservative network. And in case you couldn’t tell, the McCain campaign has only ever cared about the point scoring– ginning up sympathy for Palin and driving a wedge in the women’s vote– not the sexism. But no doubt if this exact same incident had occured on MSNBC, they would be calling for a women’s march on Washington.
