Media desperate to spark racial controversy, part 2

By Griffin · September 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

Today, the AP takes another shot at changing the national conversation from the trivial– collapse of capitalism, government takeover of Wall Street, $25/barrel rise in the price of oil in the last hour– to the vastly more important, publishing a story titled: “Hey, why is everyone still talking about this boring economy stuff when BLACK PEOPLE AND WHITE PEOPLE ARE SO DIFFERENT?!”  The lede:

Since the nation’s birth, Americans have discussed race and avoided it, organized neighborhoods and political movements around it, and used it to divide and hurt people even as relations have improved dramatically since the days of slavery, Reconstruction and legal segregation.

Now, in what could be a historic year for a black presidential candidate, a new Associated Press-Yahoo! News poll, conducted with Stanford University, shows just how wide a gap remains between whites and blacks.

Translation: “Since the beginning of time, black people and white people have never gotten along.  Now, in a year when this threatens to change, a new poll we just did shows just how different we all really are and why we should all get back to the pointless racial squabbling that defines us as Americans.”
