According to Talking Points Memo, John McCain's Pennsylvania communications director told reporters in the state an incendiary version of the hoax story about an attack on a McCain volunteer well before the facts of the case were known or established and even told reporters outright that the "B" carved in the victims chhek stood for Barack. TPM suggests that's significant because it reveals a McCain official pushing a version of the story that was far more explosive than the available or confirmed facts permitted at the time.

I love it that Palin=McCain both immediately called this woman to offer their heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery. Didn't bother to stand back for a minute and think about it.

I am willing to give her the benefit of the doubt and the cops should too, but...

This really doesn't pass the smell test on a few levels:

1) She has stated that the man sat on her chest while he carved the B. So for some reason, he chose to carve in backwards.

2) He carved that B in the dark with a dull knife? Not sure I'm ready to believe that.

3) Wouldn't the natural reaction of a person be to move around and try to get away while somebody was carving something on your face?

4) is it reasonable to think that a criminal who was originally just out for some cash would pin a woman down on a busy street and take the time to carve a perfect B on her face?

5) I have personally been the victim of an assault and I can't imagine why she waited 45 minutes to call the police or drove anywhere when she had her cell phone with her. I'm not saying that is totally out of the question for a reaction but given all the other stuff that seems unlikely, this onnly adds to my doubt.

6) Now the police are saying her story doesn't wash with 'data' from the ATM (whether that is video data or banking data I don't know)

From the perspective of a Pittsburgh local, this looks like more race-baiting from the GOP:
