Yesterday, the blogosphere was buzzing over the latest story to give the race-baiting Matt Drudge a furious erection. A black man in a sketchy neighborhood in Pittsburgh robbed Ashley Todd, 20, an out-of-town Southern white woman– who also happened to be a McCain volunteer– at knifepoint. According to Todd, the man then became enraged when he [...]

Muslim McCain supporters stay and fight Republican Party intolerance
October 23rd, 2008 · 1 Comment
(h/t warner) “All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” – Edmund Burke For whatever reason, John McCain refuses to openly denounce and distance himself from the bigotry at his rallies. When confronted about it by Bob Schieffer in the final debate, McCain stated: Let me just say [...]

McCain agrees to disagree agreeably with Pennsylvania voters
October 23rd, 2008 · 2 Comments
This video is outrageously entertaining– the feel good gaffe of the year. I love how McCain commits the initial gaffe, but then his attempted save makes the situation twice as bad. And then rather than stop, he just surrenders to a tornado of nonsensical Palinesque phrasing that eventually leads him back to the teleprompter. Classic.

McCain campaign attacks similar to those that killed JFK
October 22nd, 2008 · No Comments
On November 22, 1963, the day President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed, these leaflets were being handed out on the streets of Dallas: Today, in 2008, these mailers are being sent to households across America by John McCain: Do we even need to discuss the plane imagery– a deliberate and visceral link to 9/11? I’ve already written in [...]

Why you shouldn’t fear a last-minute McCain smear assault
October 20th, 2008 · No Comments
Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo wrote a post yesterday that is well worth reading in its entirety about the final two weeks of John McCain’s campaign and why Obama supporters should be afraid: If you’re thinking to yourself that there’s little more than two weeks before election day and Obama has a solid lead [...]

Muslims: pro-American Americans, real Americans
October 20th, 2008 · 10 Comments
In the midst of his endorsement of Barack Obama yesterday, Colin Powell made some remarks about the religious bigotry of some McCain/Palin supporters– including GOP officials– that I would like to strongly associate myself with: Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer is no. That’s not America. Is there something [...]

FiveThirtyEight encounters practical racists in Western Pennsylvania
October 18th, 2008 · No Comments
FiveThirtyEight– for my money, the most indispensible political blog out there– visited the area I grew up in today and posted a fascinating account of the challenges both Barack Obama and John McCain face in Western Pennsylvania: So a canvasser goes to a woman’s door in Washington, Pennsylvania. Knocks. Woman answers. Knocker asks who she’s planning to vote [...]

SNL: Joe the Plumber is McCain’s imaginary friend
October 17th, 2008 · No Comments
Here’s last night’s SNL sketch of the final debate, mostly focused on John McCain’s obsession with Joe the Plumber. The notion that Joe is McCain’s imaginary friend actually isn’t too far from the truth. McCain thought Joe was a plumber making over $250,000 who would pay higher taxes under Obama’s plan, and an upstanding, tax-paying, unbiased [...]

Chris Barack vs. John McCable Guy
October 17th, 2008 · No Comments
Here’s the videos of Barack Obama and John McCain roasting each other at last night’s Al Smith Dinner. A refreshing, and surprisingly entertaining, mental health break before the final stretch. Obama’s best shot at himself: Many of you know that I got my name “Barack” from my father. What you may not know is “Barack” [...]

McCain didn’t vet Joe the Plumber either
October 16th, 2008 · No Comments
For the second time, John McCain has hastily turned his campaign spotlight on a single individual only to find out the next day that he probably should have done a little more research. Turns out Joe the Plumber– McCain’s example of the American small business everyman who will be hurt by Barack Obama’s tax policies– would [...]

Final debate wrap: A picture is worth 1,000 words

This is a real picture taken at last night’s debate. One of these men will be the next President of the United States. Does anything more really need to be said?

Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright or not, the race is over
October 15th, 2008 · No Comments
According to Mike Allen at Politico, John McCain’s advisors are practically begging him to attack Barack Obama on his relationship with Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and several top campaign officials see a sharp attack on Wright as the best — and perhaps last — chance to rattle Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill. ) and force [...]

Republicans see racism “as McCain’s last, best hope”
October 14th, 2008 · No Comments
Yesterday, Adam Nagourney of the New York Times posted an article titled “It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over,” six (unconvincing) reasons why McCain can still win. Point number five caught my attention: Race is, of course, the question that has hovered over the contest for two years. Are there a significant number of white voters [...]

McCain pokes hornet’s nest, condemns swarm
October 13th, 2008 · No Comments
It’s hilarious to watch the media applauding John McCain for finally speaking out against the heated crowd rhetoric at his campaign rallies and urging supporters to be respectful. McCain has basically spent the last two weeks poking a hornet’s nest with a stick, and then when he finally expresses some concern at the size of the swarm, the media starts cheering the [...]

When vetting your VP over the phone goes wrong
October 11th, 2008 · 1 Comment
For future reference, the next time McCain runs a presidential campaign and needs to distance himself from Bush and Cheney, he might not want to pick a folksy, incurious, oil maven, who’s being investigated by an ethics committee for abusing her power. In honor of yesterday’s long-anticipated Troopergate report, and Sarah Palin officially taking her place as the worst vice [...]
